Sashiko Mending with Judilee Fitzhugh, FEB 15th 1-4 PM

“Thrift is poetic because it is creative; waste is unpoetic because it is waste.” (G.K. Chesterton, What's Wrong with the World).  Every country in the world has a unique aesthetic of mending. Japanese textiles receive an extended life with an abundance of functional but beautiful hand-stitching known as sashiko. In this workshop with textile professor Judilee, you'll stitch a small cloth suitable for a patch that can be applied to a tote, a pair of jeans, or another textile. All materials are provided. Optionally, students may bring a personal cloth to use as a base for the patch such as denim jeans or jacket, well-worn tote bag, or cotton shirt. Tea & snacks provided.
